Almost two-thirds of Costa Ricas 4,5 million inhabitants live in the central valley. The countries capital, San José, is located here, just as the cities Alajuela, Heredia, and Cartago. The airport is close to the city of Alajuela and only 20 km from San José. In the north and south, the valley is bordered by vast mountain ranges. The northern Cordillera Central was formed by volcanoes and is especially fertile. Here, the Poás volcano national park is not to be missed. The trip can be combined with a visit to a coffee plantation, the artists village Sarchí or a sight-seeing tour of San José. The Irazú volcano national park can best be visited along with Cartago or the Lankester orchid gardens. A popular day trip starting from San José is the "Aerial Tram" in the Braulio Carillo national park, an aerial railway through the tree-tops of the jungle. San José is always filled with bustling masses, colorful excitement, and heavy traffic. The national theater, the Plaza de la Cultura, the national museum, and the gold and jade museum are the sights not to be missed.
