Southern Caribbean coast

Limón, eastern Talamanca mountain range, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo & Manzanillo

The port town Limón is the turning point for trading ships sailing over the Atlantic. In the banana port of Moin, the yellow fruits are packaged for their 10-day trip to Europe. The port of Limón is visited by many cruise lines. South of the port, long, deserted beaches wind their way to the town of Cahuita with its national park of the same name. The mostly black population on the Costa Rican Caribbean coast provides for a friendly, easy-going, Caribbean atmosphere with Reggae music and cozy bars and restaurants. The palm-tree covered beaches invite travelers to try their luck at surfing or simply doing nothing. A hike through the Cahuita national park, combined with a few hours of relaxation on the park’s beaches, is highly recommended.

The town Puerto Viejo is located half an hour’s drive south of Cahuita and offers a similar flair. A little further south, the jungles of the wildlife sanctuary Gandoca-Manzanillo reach all the way to fantastic beaches with palm-trees and solitary bays.

The jungle-covered mountain sides of the Talamanca range are especially suitable for hiking and adventure tours. For considerate travelers interested in culture, a visit to the Bribri Indians can be arranged. The entire Caribbean coast offers an incredible biodiversity – wherever the eye wanders, it encounters colorful flowers, exotic birds, palm-trees, lush greens, and turquoise water.

A tip: Visit the sloth hospital near Cahuita. Here, hurt sloths are treated and later released back into the wild.
